RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – It’s going to be a busy Monday on the roads in Wake County when some schools open back up for a new school year.

“The beginning of the school year, whether it’s the first day or the 21st year, there is always a learning curve for everybody,” said Principal Andrew Livengood.RELATED: It’s back to school for thousands in Wake County

Livengood is the new principal of Pine Hollow Middle School, the brand new multi-track school that opens Monday on Bartram Place right by Leesville Road and Strickland Roads. Six hundred sixty-five students are enrolled.  Eventually Livengood hopes that number will grow to over 1,000.

“We have the capacity of 921 at any given time. Because we are a four-track school, at any time one track will be out,” said Livengood.

Residents on Bartram Place said that number of students means too many cars traveling down their street.

“Before it was a cul-de-sac.  Now we have cars speeding up and down at excess of 60 mph,” said Jeffery Wells, a Bartram Place resident.

Livengood said they added a right turn lane off the Leesville Road intersection but Wells said that won’t keep the road from being congested. He said he reached out to the county but they told him they don’t have money in the budget to do anything more.

“It’s a concern for the safety of our kids. We have a 9-year-old and he can’t play basketball because he can’t play in the yard. We have people blocking the streets,” said Wells.

In Wake Forest, construction work on Rogers Road Bridge could cause delays on Heritage Elementary and Middle Schools. Parents there said the disruption this summer will be worth it come October.

“I’m looking at this as a big positive.  It might be a hiccup, but by October it will be a big win for the community,” said Brett Geoffrey, PTA member.

The town has a detour route on their website. They are encouraging residents to take Heritage Lake Road, Dr. Calvin Jones Highway/N.C. Highway 98 Bypass and South Main Street.

Geoffrey said the Heritage Elementary school PTA has been in constant communication with parents about how to prepare for Monday.

“We are advising parents to leave a little bit earlier. We are working with the town to be as proactive as possible.”
