CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – The driver that caused a crash involving a CATS bus experienced a “medical event” and later died in the hospital, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.RELATED: 12+ injured when bus and 2 vehicles crash in Charlotte
More than a dozen people were injured in the east Charlotte crash late Saturday afternoon, shutting part of Central Avenue down for a time.
The wreck, involving a CATS bus and two vehicles, happened around 4:30 p.m. on Central Avenue near E. 10th Street.
According to CMPD, Karen Frierson, 54, suffered some sort of medical event while driving on Central Avenue. Her Ford Escape reportedly hit a car twice before the car pulled over.
Frierson continued to drive on Central until the Escape struck the back of a CATS bus which was stopped for a red light.
Thirteen people were on the bus at the time of the collision. Thirteen people were injured in the crash, seven of those people were treated on scene and six were sent to the hospital, according to officials.
Frierson and the passenger in her car were two of the people taken to the hospital. Soon after, Frierson was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police.
Medic said one person was treated for cardiac arrest, which may have occurred before the crash.
