CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Katherine Jones was shot to death over the weekend – not far from Midwood Smokehouse where coworkers remember her as warm and friendly. Friends and family called her Ketie.
Ketie Jones’ mom didn’t want to do an interview Monday afternoon, but she did tell WBTV that Ketie’s friends are helping her get through this.
“From the very moment she was born she burst into the world ready to live life to the fullest,” Jevona Livingston, wrote online. “She shined brighter than any star. She was our world that we circled. We were blessed to be in her life.”
Police are not releasing many details about the investigation. They say Jones was found shot Saturday morning around 2:45 a.m. and died behind a business located on the Plaza.RELATED: NC woman shot and killed while walking home, found dead behind business
A woman who lives about a block away says she heard nothing and is only guessing what happened.
“My assumption is it would be a very random crime. I’ve lived here three years and I haven’t heard of anything similar happening,” she said, “So I don’t feel like we’re in a hotbed of criminality out here. My guess is she was walking home [and] someone saw that she was alone.”
A neighbor walked her dogs past the memorial for Jones Monday night. She admitted that is hard not to feel uneasy.
“You figure you’re safe in your own neighborhood and I’m out walking the dogs morning and night,” explained neighbor Dorothy Craig. “Something like this happens so close to home and for them not to know who or how or why, it’s just a really unsettling feeling.”
Ketie’s mom said she was killed by a gunshot while she was walking home in a section of Plaza Midwood where she felt safe and loved.
They are calling what happened a senseless act of violence. Now they are trying to plan memorials as police continue to search for the person responsible. Ketie had two dogs, Bean Sprout and Snow Pea that need a new forever home together.
There is an online application.
Tuesday night there will be a benefit at Snug Harbor to help the family. People have left flowers where she died, but friends want flowers to be left where she lived.
That is what they are planning for Saturday, a memorial service at Jones’ home in Plaza Midwood.
