GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) – Extra police will be on hand at Garner High School on Thursday after images purporting to show a threat of a school shooting circulated on social media, officials confirmed.UPDATE: Parents, students react after Garner teen arrested over violent Snapchat threats

A little before midnight, Garner police announced on its Facebook page that officers made an arrest in the incident involving the online threat to students. They say the suspect is a 17-year-old Garner Magnet High School student.

The student has since been identified as Judah Alexander Dennis, of Garner. Dennis has been charged with making a false report concerning mass violence on educational property, a class H felony.

A warrant says Dennis made the threat but knew he did not have access to a firearm.

“I have been made aware of a screenshots of several Snapchat that included threatening language and referenced Garner,” wrote Principal Carter Hillman. “As soon as I became aware, I informed the Garner Police Department and WCPSS Security to investigate.”

Screenshots of the Snaps sent to CBS North Carolina appear to show a person identified as Dennis threatening to kill “monkeys” (black students) at the school. The Snapchat user who sent the images used a different name, but police say Dennis was the person behind the Snaps.

Garner police will provide an extra security presence at both of the school’s campuses Thursday, Hillman wrote.

He also urged parents to remind their children “not to share rumors and perpetuate fear on social media.”

Wake Schools Superintendent James Merrill released a written statement Thursday afternoon where he addressed the threats.

“In our school community we do not consider social media threats humorous, cute, or insignificant. Please talk with your students and help them understand that they are creating a digital footprint that not only will speak for itself, but will also follow them as they continue their schooling and careers,” Merrill’s statement said in part.

Dennis is being held in the Wake County Detention Center under a $5,000 bond. He is due in court Thursday.
