DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A man was shot to death early on Monday just off Chapel Hill Road in Durham, police said.

Officers responded to a shooting call around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Jackson Street and Underwood Avenue, about a mile west of downtown Durham.

Police originally told CBS 17 the victim was taken to the hospital but said they were not sure the extent of the person’s injuries. A CBS 17 crew at the scene later in the morning reported seeing a man’s body lying in the street next to a crashed SUV. Police sent a release just before noon saying that a man had been shot and killed in the incident. They did not mention anyone being injured.

The shooting happened in the middle of a neighborhood.

University Apartments are on one side of the street and on the other side are long-term residents, some who have been in the community for 10 years or more.

Those in the community are upset there was a shooting just feet from their homes and frustrated that police left a man’s body in the road for more than 10 hours.

Neighbors told CBS 17 that they heard multiple gunshots and came outside to see a man dead in the street.

Police at the scene were looking at two vehicles – a burgundy SUV with multiple bullet holes in the windshield and a silver-colored sedan.
